Not really horror but a halloween story ;D
The cold night air surrounded Sam’s body, creeping silently through his clothes as he walked along the deserted cobbles. Aware it was Halloween, Sam thought of his friends all out trick or treating as he stalked through the dimly lit street, alone. He watched his warm breath seep into the crisp night air, before it faded away to nothing. He listened to the squelching noise that his trainers made in the puddles of water trapped like prisoners between the uneven cobbles.
Another noise sounded in the distance. Sam’s ears strained with concentration as he realised that the noise was getting closer and closer. Beads of sweat trickled like blood down Sam’s forehead and stung his wide-open eyes. Holding his breath, he stopped in his tracks and slowly, carefully, turned his head.
“Maddy,” Sam called out. “Maddy, it’s not funny any more.” Trying to pick out his six-year-old sister from among the shadows, Sam tried to work out how it was that he had gone from scoffing his collected sweets to searching for his younger sister in the space of half an hour. Maddy had seemed to vanish within the space of half an hour, and Sam was constantly regretting his decision to bring the youngster along.
The mysterious noise had returned, shaking Sam out of his dreamlike state. A small, shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, a floaty robe sweeping across the floor.
“Maddy?” Sam asked, slowly approaching the figure. In the darkness, it looked a lot like the little girl, especially in the witch costume she had insisted on wearing. Upon closer inspection, however, Sam could see that the figure was inhuman. Transparent, faceless and hovering a few millimetres from the cobbles, it reached out a cloaked hand and beckoned Sam forwards.
“What do you want?” Sam’s voice trembled as he spoke. No vocal response was given; instead the mysterious being continued to gesture to Sam. First making the shape of a the letter M, then pointing to its left, and finally to Sam, it appeared to be communicating a sentence. Unfortunately, the confused boy was unable to decipher the message. Eventually, it made the shape of a girl, and Sam realised what it was trying to say.
“Maddy!” he gasped, making a frantic dash to where the figure had been pointing. As he ran, he became aware of the ghostly creature escorting him in the right direction. It was as if all Sam’s control over direction had been taken away, and he was being guided by an unearthly being.
“Maddy!” Sam screamed as he saw his little sister sitting on the kerbside, her left leg trapped in the drain. He crouched down and hugged her, kissing her on the forehead. “I’m so sorry, Mads. I thought you were behind me, but then…I didn’t mean to leave you on your own. Come on, let’s get you out of there.” He struggled to lift the heavy girl up.
“But I wasn’t on my own.” Oblivious to her brother’s distress, Maddy spoke in a soft lisp. “Garenya was here.”
“Garenya?” Sam turned, unsure who he was looking for. “Where’s Garenya now?”
“He went to fetch you. He came back with you, then he went away.”
“Nobody came to fetch me,” Sam responded, then remembered the mysterious being. He looked suddenly to his right, expecting his ghostly escort to be beside him. But Garenya, whatever he was, had vanished, and Sam doubted he would ever see him again.
